Linalool Terpene Explained

Terpenes Explained: Linalool

Linalool is a naturally occurring terpene alcohol found in many plants, particularly in flowers and spices. It is known for its pleasant floral and slightly spicy aroma, making it a common ingredient in perfumes, cosmetics, and household products. Linalool is prevalent in lavender, basil, coriander, mint, cinnamon, and certain citrus fruits.

Chemically, linalool has the molecular formula C₁₀H₁₈O and belongs to the class of monoterpenes, which are composed of two isoprene units. It exists in two stereoisomeric forms: (R)-linalool and (S)-linalool, which have slightly different scents. The (R)-enantiomer is more common in lavender and has a floral scent, while the (S)-enantiomer, found in coriander and sweet orange, has a woodier aroma.

Linalool is widely used in industries beyond perfumery. It is a key component in essential oils and is frequently added to cleaning products, air fresheners, and even insect repellents. Additionally, it serves as an intermediate in the synthesis of other fragrance compounds and fine chemicals.

Beyond consumer products, linalool also plays a role in plant ecology. Many plants produce it as part of their natural defense mechanisms against herbivores and pests. Some insects are repelled by its scent, while others, such as certain pollinators, are attracted to it. This dual function contributes to plant survival and reproduction.

In industrial settings, linalool is used in the manufacture of vitamins and other fine chemicals. It also acts as a precursor in the production of synthetic flavors and fragrances. The compound is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by regulatory agencies when used in food and cosmetic applications.

Due to its widespread presence in plants and various consumer products, linalool is one of the most commonly encountered terpenes in daily life. You’ll find linalool used in our CBD Sleep Drops, which can be found here.
